Four ways to make the Airspace Quilt

By pattern testers

This is the Airspace Quilt in the quilts and words of the quilters who helped me to test the pattern and make sure it was just right for you.

It still amazes me that people I've never met, from all over the world, volunteered their skills, fabric, time and energy to help test the Airspace Quilt pattern. These quilters REALLY made the pattern their own. They took the design, added their own creativity, and each made something unique. They’ve found such versatility in the pattern that even I didn’t realise was there as the designer!

Here’s a closer look at the different ways my pattern testers interpreted the Airspace Quilt, along with their personal feedback on using the pattern. Click through the slideshows below and let them inspire your own quilt!

The solids version

The Airspace Quilt works especially well with solid fabrics. The clean lines and crisp points of all those flying geese pair perfectly with saturated blocks of colour, from subtle and romantic to bold and striking. Here’s how Claire, Lesley and Sian got the solids look:

The bold background version

Bringing the background fabric into the spotlight is a fun twist on the classic patchwork quilt look. Here’s how Kaitlin, Stacy and Rebecca used a show-stopping ‘background’ fabric and made it the star of their quilts:

The three (or two) colour version

The Airspace Quilt pattern design uses five different fabrics, plus a background fabric, to create the patchwork top. Buy what if you distill that down to just three, or even two, fabrics? That’s exactly the idea that Sonja and Jenny experimented with to create a completely different look. Here’s how they did it:

The subtle pattern version

Airspace is a bold, modern quilt design with lots of angles, created by the flying geese based blocks. Some of my pattern testers cleverly softened all that geometry with pretty prints and colourful pattern. Their quilts have a different look and feel that’s more subtle, playful and even romantic! Here’s how Laura, Sue and Merce created a new look Airspace Quilt:
