The perfect next step for new quilters*.
This guided quilt-a-long will build confidence in your new patchwork and quilting skills, introduce you to more useful techniques for modern quilt making and and help you to create another beautiful patchwork quilt.
You’ll make your own unique quilt using my Hadaway Quilt pattern and learn how to make ‘half-square’ triangles - a classic and versatile patchwork technique found in thousands of quilt pattern designs.
You’ll make a generous throw-size quilt with your personal choice of fabrics, wadding and preferred basting tools.
We’ll get together for five classes, at key points in the making process, so we can learn and sew together. There will be piecing and quilting work to do from home in between classes. I will support you throughout with guidance, notes, resources and encouragement.
Together, we’ll make modern family heirlooms to be treasured.
*This course is ideal for anyone who has learnt to quilt on one of my beginners courses (or an equivalent). If you’re not sure whether this is the right course for you, please contact me first so that we can think it through together.

Choose, prepare and cut fabric for patchwork
Sew patchwork pieces together to create ‘blocks’
Combine the three layers of a quilt ready for quilting
Add quilting stitches to hold the layers of a quilt together
Make and attach binding to complete a quilt.
You’ll put your new skills into practice to create a modern patchwork quilt measuring about 42”x42”: the perfect size to use as a cot quilt, playmat, small throw or picnic blanket.

The company of like-minded beginners
Freshly-baked snacks and bottomless tea and coffee to fuel your learning

A packed lunch to keep you going as we learn.
At the end of the course you will:

Learn to love your walking foot! Master four simple and and effective designs for machine quilting with a standard domestic sewing machine and walking foot (also known as an even-feed foot).
This one-day workshop will teach you everything you need to know to successfully quilt your own quilts at home. Kathleen will share all her tips and techniques based on 15 years of quilt-making and 10 years of teaching beginners and new quilters, just like you.
By the end of the day you will:
Understand options to prepare the layers of your quilt for basting and quilting
Know how to fit a walking foot and set-up your machine for successful quilting
Feel confident to re-create four machine-quilted, edge-to-edge designs independently
Have the skills to develop each design with additional features to elevate your quilting.
This course is taught from Kathleen’s light and spacious home-from-home studio, using her fleet of Janome sewing machines. To make the most of the available time, you will be provided with pre-basted quilt-sandwich samples on which to practice so there is no need to bring any equipment or fabric to the class.
This course is best suited to new quilters who’ve previously made one or two quilts and have tried machine quilting before. However, beginners are also welcome. If you’re not sure whether this is the right course for you, please contact me first so that we can think it through together.

You’ll make a large throw-size quilt using my ‘Sweet Shop’ pattern and your personal choice of fabrics, wadding and preferred basting tools. Together we’ll learn how to make and combine two classic patchwork blocks - a ‘churn dash’ and a ‘nine-patch’ - with precision and accuracy.
*Before the course begins, we’ll meet for a short, bonus session all about colour and fabric choices, to help you plan your quilt with confidence. Then we’ll get together for five regular classes, at key points in the making process, so we can learn and sew together.
There will be piecing and quilting work to do from home in between classes. I will support you throughout with guidance, notes, resources and encouragement. Sewing machines and cutting tools are provided in class. You will need your own equipment to work on your quilt between classes at home.
This course is ideal for anyone who has learnt to quilt on one of my beginners courses and completed the ‘next steps in patchwork and quilting’ course (or an equivalent). Ideally, you’ll have made three or four quilts before taking the ‘more steps’ course. If you’re not sure whether it is the right course for you, please contact me first so that we can think it through together.
